 Name:Zhang Xiangyu
Department: Graduate School of Engineering, Program in System Cybernetics
 Course: Technical Creation Course
Research Field: VLSI circuit architecture design for intelligent applications in disadvantaged areas
 Supervisor: Hans Jürgen Mattausch

Career and Academic Background before TAOYAKA Program

Zhang Xiangyu graduated from Tianjin University with the honor of “Tianjin University Outstanding Graduates” in July 2013. Her major was Electronic Science and Technology. With a wish to build a solid theoretical foundation and gain abundant practical experience for her future research, she devoted herself to her study at university. Her intelligence and diligence have been proved. Her overall GPA of 3.79/4.0 ranked among the top four percent of her major. Also, she won various scholarships and honors in four consecutive years, among which were The Scholarship of Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, The Dean Reward of School of Electronic Information Engineering and so on.

Research Plan in TAOYAKA Program

Zhang Xiangyu’s research plan is about sensing maintenance (reliability) and communication technology study for power supply systems in disadvantaged areas. The aim of her research is to solve human-wildlife conflicts which are common phenomena from the past and have become significant problems in Japan. She plans to develop a stand-alone automatic animal species recognition system which can protect lives and property effectively. The goal of such a system is real-time animal recognition, localization, and information sending to nearby residents through a communicator, so that they can avoid dangerous animals. If unpredictable situations happen, such as wild animals destroy, extreme weather and so on, the system can realize localization, and information sending to nearby residents through a communicator.

Career Plan after TAOYAKA Program

Upon graduation, Zhang Xiangyu intends to go to some places where she can realize her value, developing various technologies corresponding to the needs of these regions. She hopes she can work for a company as an engineer who generates low-cost technology that functions even under poor conditions in western of China, India or other disadvantaged regions. As an essential contribution to the company, she shall apply the achievements in her research to the further development of the company towards helping to build a flexible, enduring and peaceful society. Another possibility is that she shall work at a research institute or a university as a researcher who matches technology concepts with diverse values and environmental changes. Also, she hopes the program experience will help her to become able to create science and technology which better match the issues in culture and social environments in disadvantaged regions. In addition, she would become capable to foster students who are capable of applying and implementing appropriate cutting-edge science and technology properly for resolving the problems faced by disadvantaged regions.
