■ Abstract：Climate change mitigation necessitates the transformation of current economic systems towards sustainable low-carbon systems. A crucial element is the transition of energy systems towards “green” sources such as hydro, wind and PV. Attempts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels can be observed in several high and middle income countries, fueling hopes for the feasibility of a green energy transition. On the other hand, a massive extension of fossil fuel projects is on the way in several developing countries. The aim of this talk is to discuss blind spots of the current debates on sustainability transitions, and to contrast energy transitions in the global north with energy ‘trilemmas’ in the global south.
